SJVN achieved a historic milestone, India’s first multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot

The hydrogen energy

SJVN Limited, a frontrunner in India’s power sector, has achieved a historic milestone. They inaugurated the nation’s first Multi-purpose (Combined Heat & Power) Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Himachal Pradesh.

This innovative project marks a significant step towards clean energy adoption in India. Let’s delve into its key aspects:

  • First-of-its-Kind: This is the first Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Generation Plant in India, showcasing a combined approach to clean energy production.
  • Dual Functionality: The project offers two significant benefits:
    • Clean Electricity Generation: It generates clean electricity through a 25 kW Fuel Cell.
    • Combustion Fuel Needs: It caters to the High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) Coating Facility of NJHPS by meeting its fuel requirements with green hydrogen, reducing reliance on traditional sources.
  • Green Hydrogen Production: The project utilizes renewable energy from SJVN’s 1.31 MW Solar Power Plant to produce green hydrogen through a 20 Nm3/hr alkaline electrolyzer. This ensures a clean and sustainable source for hydrogen generation.
  • Production and Storage: The pilot project has the capacity to produce 14 kg of green hydrogen daily, which will be stored in tanks with a total capacity of 12 m3.
  • Applications: The green hydrogen produced will find use in:
    • HVOF Coating of turbine underwater parts, promoting a cleaner process.
    • Electricity generation through the 25 kW Fuel Cell, maximizing efficiency.

Alignment with National Goals:

This Green Hydrogen Pilot Project directly aligns with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. SJVN’s initiative is poised to accelerate the development of green hydrogen production infrastructure in the power sector, establishing it as a viable clean energy source for the future.

Additional Achievements:

SJVN further marked the occasion by inaugurating the first-of-its-kind Centralized Operation of NJHPS and Rampur Hydro Power Station (Rampur HPS). This innovative system allows remote operation of Unit-2 of RHPS from the NJHPS Control Room, signifying a leap forward in operational efficiency.

Overall, SJVN’s commitment to innovation and clean energy development is commendable. These projects position them as a leader in India’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
