State owned, GAIL (India) Limited, a leading natural gas storage and distribution company, has taken a significant step towards clean energy by installing its first Green Hydrogen Plant at GAIL Vijaipur in Madhya Pradesh. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Shri Pankaj Jain, along with other senior officials.

Key Details:

Plant Location: GAIL Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh

Capacity: 4.3 Tons Per Day (TPD) of Hydrogen

Technology: Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzer

Electrolyzer capacity: 10 MW

Hydrogen Purity: 99.999% (by volume)

Operating Pressure: 30 Kg/cm²

Green Hydrogen Production Process:

Electrolysis of Water: The green hydrogen plant utilizes 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer units to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable power. This process ensures that the hydrogen produced is clean and sustainable.

Fuel Usage: Initially, the hydrogen generated will be used alongside natural gas for own captive purposes within the existing processes and equipment at the Vijaipur plant. This integration demonstrates the feasibility of blending hydrogen with conventional fuels.

Retail Dispensing: GAIL plans to dispense the green hydrogen to retail customers in nearby areas. The high-pressure cascades will facilitate safe transportation of hydrogen.

Solar Power Integration

In addition to the electrolyzer-based hydrogen production, GAIL is committed to sourcing renewable power. To meet the energy requirements of the 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer, the company is setting up approximately 20 MW of solar power plants at Vijaipur. These solar installations, both ground-mounted and floating, will contribute to the overall green energy ecosystem.

National Green Hydrogen Mission:

GAIL’s initiative aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to promote hydrogen as a clean and versatile energy carrier. The mission targets setting up at least 5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) per annum of green hydrogen capacity by 2030, in India.

By setting up this Green Hydrogen Plant and green hydrogen technology, GAIL is contributing to India’s transition towards a sustainable energy future.

Green Hydrogen in Stainless Steel Industry: A Game-Changer for Sustainability

The integration of green hydrogen into stainless steel production marks a significant leap toward decarbonizing the industrial sector. Stainless steel manufacturing is traditionally a carbon-intensive process, with fossil fuels often used in annealing, heating, and power generation. By adopting green hydrogen, Jindal Stainless (JSL) has demonstrated a transformative approach to reducing its carbon footprint while enhancing efficiency.

Jindal Stainless has made notable strides in its decarbonisation efforts, as highlighted at the UN COP28 summit in Dubai, where the company showcased its initiatives at the India Pavilion at the invitation of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. With a significant reduction of approximately 240,000 tonnes of CO2e over the past two fiscal years (FY22 and FY23), Jindal Stainless is well on its way to achieving its midterm goal of a 50% reduction in carbon emissions well ahead of the 2035 target year and Net Zero by 2050.

The commissioning was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Steel and Civil Aviation, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia ji virtually from New Delhi, in the presence of the Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Shri Nagendra Nath Sinha, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless, Mr Abhyuday Jindal and CEO of the technology partner, Hygenco Green Energies, Mr Amit Bansal.
